International Conference on Development, Freedom and Welfare 

What:  Cornell University and the Institute For Human Development are calling for papers for the International Conference on Development, Freedom and Welfare in honour of Professor Amartya Sen. Submissions are being sought from young researchers below the age of 40 years (preference will be given to younger researchers). Disability, Disadvantage and Development in the Pacific & Asia 

What:  Held at Visions Theatre, the National Museum of Australia, Canberra from
September 29-30, 2008 this conference aims to be an in-depth, multidisciplinary exploration of the inter-relationship between disability, disadvantage and
development - a relationship that until recently has not been well recognized in development research, policy or practice. The conference will provide first hand information on the situation of people with disabilities in the Pacific and Asia region including their access to services, their ability to access information and their opportunities for development. It will review the work of the global, regional and local organizations working with people with disabilities and the strategies and actions needed to ensure equal access to social and economic development of all. The conference will bring together people with disabilities, disability practitioners, development workers, representatives of disabled people’s organizations, policy makers, aid donors, academics and government

The Workshop'08 

What:  Praxis will be holding its 'Annual Praxis Commune on Participatory Development' between 19-28 August, 2008 at the KILA Campus, Thrissur (Kerala), India. The workshop acts as a forum for participants from across the world to come together for reflection and learning. It provides both, a theoretical understanding of participatory approaches/tools as well as the opportunity to apply them in the field. The ten days include general and specific module based theory, three days in various rural, peri-urban and urban field settings, as appropriate to the module content and finally a sharing, reflection and feedback session. Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance 

What:  The Center for Asia-Pacific Women in Politics (CAPWIP) and the United
Nations International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UN/ISDR) are holding the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance. TorqAid - Participatory Project Management workshop 

What:  This TorqAid workshop is designed to help individuals learn practical and participatory project management skills, which are used in community development (CD) projects in the Pacific Region. The three main project management methodologies introduced are Project Cycle Management (PCM); Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) , and the Logical Framework Approach (LFA), or Logframes for short. We will also be reviewing projects in the light of AusAID’s latest Annual Review of Development Effectiveness (ARDE), 2007. The Workshop will be held in Suva, Fiji between the 15 - 17 July 2008. TSCF 2008 Malta Conference 

What:  The Social Capital Foundation (TSCF) conference will discuss openly the issues associated with social capital, social inclusion and social cohesion. This type of conference brings together social scientists, economists, policymakers, social workers and the widest spectrum of the involved players to explore the social cohesion issues arising in our society. The objective is to make progress on the understanding of these issues, by shedding light on some current developments and drafting innovative, practical responses. CID training – Sustainability: Development and the Environment 

What:  This Council for International Development workshop will look at the impact of development on the environment and explore ways to minimise negative impacts. There will be an opportunity to discuss ways to take environmental issues in planning and practice and to share experiences and information. International Institute of Rural Reconstruction courses on Development Management & PME 

What:  The IIRR will soon hold two back-to-back courses. The first, a three week 'International Course on Participatory Approaches to Development Management' will run from 14 July to 1 August 2008 and includes four modules. The second, is a three week 'International Course on Participatory Monitoring & Evaluation (PME)' and will run from 11 August to 29 August 2008 and also includes four modules. RedR Training - Essentials of Humanitarian Practice Residential Training 

What:  Held on the 26th to 31st of July 2008 at the Burnham Military Camp, Christchurch, this RedR Training aims to prepare relief workers for the realities of life on assignment so that they are able to contribute as effectively as possible. The course provides an understanding of the international context of emergency relief work, explaining the distinctions between natural disasters and conflict induced emergencies and provides an introduction to the international humanitarian system. The cost is RedR Members NZ$700; Bona fide NGO members, NZ$1000; Others NZ$1500.

Second Intensive Course on Health, Development and Human Rights 

What:  This Course will be Directed by Professor Daniel Tarantola, Professor of Health and Human Rights at the University of New South Wales. The course seks to; 1) Define underlying principles and prominent approaches applied to each of the fields of health, development and human rights; 2) Describe the reciprocal interaction between health, development and human rights and how these linkages can be analysed and applied in practice in one or more selected areas pertinent to participants interests; 3) Illustrate how international mechanisms and procedures can be applied to health, development and human rights and how they can be accessed; 4) Identify key actions and research that is needed to further the synergy between health, development and human rights. The Annual Global Development Awards and Medals Competition - 2008 

What:  The Global Development Network is now accepting submissions for its annual competition for development research proposals/papers and development projects. The theme for this year's awards is Natural Resource Management. Awards are given out both for research and innovative development projects. The awards are only open to citizens of developing or transition countries.

The Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) - Asia Pacific 

What:  This ISIF grants program is aimed at stimulating creative solutions to ICT development needs in the Asia Pacific region, placing particular emphasis on the role of the Internet in social and economic development in the region, towards the effective development of the Information Society throughout. Grant applications and project proposals can come from Asia-Pacific-based public or private sector organisations, university or Research and Development (R&D) institutions, and non-government organisations. CSR Asia Summit 2008
