Joseph Brockliss’s research: Pedagogies of Plurality, Chiapas, Mexico.
Joe Brockliss is a Master of International Development student at Massey University. He researched Indigenous-led education in Chiapas, Mexico, focusing on how bottom-up schooling models foster buen vivir (living well). His thesis examined how Zapatista communities integrate education with cultural, ecological, and economic practices, and critically engaged with post-development perspectives to highlight the limitations of mainstream education in providing culturally responsive curricula. Joe’s findings offer valuable insights for shaping development and education policy in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.
“I would like to sincerely thank my supervisors, Professor Regina Scheyvens and Dr Peter Howland, for their guidance, encouragement, and invaluable expertise throughout my research. I am also grateful to DevNet and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) for supporting this work through the Postgraduate Development Research Award, and to Massey University for awarding me the Sir Alan Stewart Postgraduate Scholarship. Their combined support has been instrumental in enabling me to carry out this research and share its findings.”
