Sieni’s research topic: The ambivalent relationship between land tenure and tourism development on Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Sieni’s research explores how tourism development has changed the way land is used and valued on Rarotonga. It looks at how landholders have responded to the growth of tourism over the past twenty years and how they balance development opportunities with their responsibilities to family, culture, and future generations.

As a Cook Islands Māori researcher, Sieni understands that land is more than something that can be leased or developed. It connects us to our families, ancestors, and sense of belonging. Her research shows that landholders play an active role in shaping tourism development and calls for development that respects our customary systems, supports shared decision-making, and protects the land and environment on which our community and tourism industry depend.
