Kiera’s Research Topic: Progress Towards SDG6 on ‘Eua, Tonga: Review of the MORDI Tonga Trust project to enhance disaster preparedness for water security

Located on ‘Eua, a beautiful outer island in Tonga, this research aimed to understand the opportunities and barriers in the delivery and evaluation of water security projects. A key additional outcome was demonstrating the utility of co-designed Community Development Plans (CDPs) for research.

This research identified the need for development planning to prioritise self-sufficiency, including pathways for ongoing resource procurement and training. It further highlights the need for increased project evaluation and effective sharing of this data among government agencies and NGOs in Tonga.

I am so grateful to the team at MORDI for their guidance, support, and hospitality as I undertook this research project, and particularly to MORDI TT CEO, Soane Patolo, who trusted me to deliver this project as part of his vision to link student research with development organisation’s research needs. It was such a priviledge to work alongside implementers, and community members across Tonga, contributing to such meaningful work. Their input through every stage of this research has enabled us to produce a report that identifies relevant, actionable steps to improve water security projects in Tonga.

As an aspiring researcher this was an invaluable opportunity, I am so grateful to DevNet, and my supervisors, Dr. Nick Kim and A/Pro Carol Stewart for their support.
