Malathi’s Research Topic: Cultivating Resilience: Collective Responses to Climate Challenges of Water-Dependent Agrarian Communities in Sri Lanka
Agrarian communities in Sri Lanka’s dry zone, which rely on traditional small-scale communal irrigation systems, are increasingly facing pressures from climate uncertainties alongside broader socio-economic challenges. My research explores how these water-dependent communities collectively adapt their local institutions to respond to such pressures, sustain their livelihoods, and manage shared resources, thereby fostering resilience in the face of uncertainty and change.
Engaging closely with water-dependent agrarian communities in Sri Lanka through an in-depth field study offered me both rich insights and invaluable learning opportunities. Throughout the fieldwork, it became evident how profoundly farmers are affected by diverse challenges to both resources and livelihoods, particularly due to delayed monsoons and unexpected dry periods. My prior experience witnessing the struggles of these communities inspired me to undertake this research study. Through my research findings, I seek to advance understanding of sustainable pathways to strengthen the resilience of resource-dependent communities, highlighting the critical role of local collective action.
I am deeply grateful to DevNet and MFAT for their generous funding, which made this field research possible and provided reassurance throughout the process. I also wish to acknowledge the support of the Graduate Research Fund of the School of People, Environment and Planning at Massey University. My heartfelt thanks go to my wonderful supervisors, Dr. Alice Beban and Dr. Vicky Walters, for their unwavering guidance and support. I am profoundly thankful to research participants, who generously shared their insights and life stories, which I regard as truly invaluable.
